Belmopan is the capital city of Belize.
After the destruction caused by the hurricane Hattie in 1961 to Belize City, the capital of that time, it was decided to build a new capital that would be safe from tropical cyclones.
The construction of this city started in the late 1960s and in 1970, the capital was officially shifted from Belize City to Belmopan.
Hence, Belmopan is a planned city that lies across approximately 50 miles and can tolerate seasonal storms as it exists around 250 feet above sea level.

Belmopan is situated in the Cayo district of Belize near the Belize river valley that is 50 miles from the Caribbean coast
Demographics
Currently, Belmopan is the smallest capital city in the western hemisphere with just a population size of 17,000+ people. But it is also the fastest growing population center of the country as many immigrants are now settling down around its suburbs.
Religion
The majority population of Belmopan are Roman Catholics. It also has a large population of Protestants and Mayans who each practice their religions independently.

Not many people plan their vacations around Belmopan which is really unfortunate because this city is very unique and well-designed. It has a large layout with numerous beautiful parks and green spaces. It also depicts a great combination of western and ancient Maya cultures.
